What is SEO?
No jargon, no mystique. Here is what search engine optimisation actually is, what it costs in Melbourne, and how long it honestly takes.
SEO stands for search engine optimisation. Stripped of the industry fog, it means one thing: making it easy for a search engine to understand what you do, and giving it reasons to believe you are the best answer for someone nearby who needs it.
That is the whole game. Everything else — keywords, backlinks, schema, Core Web Vitals — is just tactics serving those two goals.
The three things Google is actually weighing
For a local business, Google is grading you on three axes. Every legitimate SEO task maps back to one of them.
1. Relevance — do you match what they asked?
If someone searches "emergency plumber Werribee" and your site never uses those words, never names the suburb, and buries your services in an image, Google has nothing to match. Relevance is won with clear page structure: one page per thing you sell, a descriptive title, honest headings, and content that answers the actual question.
2. Distance — how close are you?
For local searches Google heavily favours proximity to the searcher. This is the most underrated fact in local SEO, and it is very good news for smaller businesses. You cannot outspend a large city agency, but you can beat them in your own suburb, because they are not near your customer and you are. This is why we build a page for each suburb we serve.
3. Prominence — is there evidence you are any good?
Reviews, mentions on other websites, directory listings, and links. Google cannot judge quality directly, so it counts corroboration from sources it already trusts. This is the slowest axis to move and the one that separates real SEO from a quick tidy-up.
On-page, off-page, technical
You will hear SEO split three ways. It is a useful split:
- Technical SEO — can Google reach, read and index your pages at all? Crawlability, sitemaps, speed, mobile rendering. Boring, invisible, and completely decisive. If this is broken nothing else matters.
- On-page SEO — the content and structure of your pages. Titles, headings, copy, internal links, structured data.
- Off-page SEO — everything that happens elsewhere. Reviews, citations, links, press, being talked about.
What SEO costs in Melbourne
Melbourne agencies commonly charge between $800 and $4,000 a month for ongoing SEO, and many require a twelve-month lock-in. That pricing exists because the work genuinely takes time — but it puts real SEO out of reach for the small businesses that need it most.
We price differently: AI SEO starts at $250 a month, and our No Rank, No Fee plan is $499 to start and then nothing until you actually reach page one. That is only possible because an AI-assisted workflow lets us do in hours what used to take days.
How long it actually takes
Anyone promising page one in a week for a competitive term is lying. Here is the honest picture:
- Your own business name — days, once the site is indexable.
- Suburb + service terms like "web design Tarneit" — typically three to eight weeks.
- City-wide head terms like "SEO Melbourne" — six to twelve months of sustained work, competing against twenty-year-old domains.
The trap is agencies quoting the first timeline while selling you the third keyword. Ask any agency to tell you, in writing, which tier each of your target keywords sits in.
What to do first
If you do nothing else this month, do these three, in order:
- Check you are actually indexed. Google site:yourdomain.com.au. If nothing appears, stop everything and fix that first — it is more common than you would believe.
- Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile. For a local business it usually drives more enquiries than the website.
- Ask your last ten happy customers for a Google review. Nothing else moves local rankings faster for less effort.
